Details: An impossible crime requires brilliant minds. Dr. Thurston and his wife Mary love to spend evenings at their residence in the English countryside conversing on a variety of topics with a group of trusted friends. But one Friday in autumn, their party ends in tragedy. At eleven in the evening, as usual, Mary Thurston goes to bed, but a few minutes later terrible screams are heard coming from her bedroom. The landlord and the guests rush to the place and, finding the door locked, decide to break it down. But now it is too late: the woman lies on the bed with her throat cut. The thick mystery that surrounds this case attracts three famous amateur detectives to the place: Lord Simon Plimsoll, Monsieur Amer Picon and Monsignor Smith. The three each carry out their own investigations reaching different conclusions, while the methodical and peaceful Sergeant William Beef, for whom the local pub is almost a second home, immediately seems all too convinced that he has the solution in hand. Which of them got it right? Originally published in 1936, this famous mystery is made even more intriguing by the fact that the figures of the three detectives are modeled on those of Lord Peter Wimsey, Hercule Poirot and Father Brown. Leo Bruce, alias Rupert Croft-Cooke was born in Edenbridge in England, in 1903. Critic, novelist, author of comedies, radio dramas and travel books, he established himself in detective literature with his works full of ingenious plots and humorous gimmicks. He died in 1979
