Details: The best-known novel by the Sicilian writer Giovanni Verga, published in Milan by the publisher Treves in 1881. The novel tells the story of a family of fishermen who live and work in Aci Trezza, a small Sicilian town near Catania. The novel has a choral setting, and represents characters united by the same culture but divided by their different life choices, however overwhelmed by an inevitable destiny. The writer adopts the technique of impersonality, reproducing some characteristics of the dialect and adapting as much as possible to the point of view of the different characters, thus renouncing the usual mediation of the narrator.
