The work, the result of systematic archival research and a very extensive bibliographic information, constitutes the elaboration of the thesis of the PhD in Economic and Social History, carried out at the University “L. Bocconi” in Milan. The main object of analysis are the fiscal policy and the financial system of the Venetian Republic during the 16th century.
Luciano Pezzolo highlights its characteristics and deficiencies, and its limited aptitude for adapting to the economic and social situation of the country. The effects of the tax system on the various categories of taxpayers, the numerous privileges, exemptions, the difficulties of income assessments and the mechanisms for transferring the tax burden are investigated with particular attention. The author thus grasps the impact of the tax activity on the economy of the Veneto state and in its effects on the social order.
In the analysis of the concrete effects of taxation, taxation comes to constitute a sort of observatory of balances and contrasts, on the one hand between the various orders of citizens, on the other between the dominant city and subject territories.
